About the event
Sergej Magnitsky, a Russian tax adviser, born April 8, 1972, uncovered one of the biggest tax frauds in Russian history, committed by a group of Russian officials. This earned him an arrest and captivity in a prison in Moscow, where he died two years later when proper treatment for medical issues was denied to him. He was victim of a terrible injustice. The EU Magnitsky Act is in effect since December 2020. It allows for targeted measures against any individual involved in gross human rights violations outside EU.
Our experts are Michael Gahler, MEP, and a supporter of the initiative in the European Parliament, Karl Altau, Managing Director Joint Baltic American National Committee, a strong advocate for the initiative since its beginnings in the US, and Tanja Nyberg of the Magnitsky Act Initiative in the US.
